A (hopefully) final update for today

Well, I think we’re in the clear for today. The drainage, while a good thing normally, was a bit too bloody for Dr. Mello’s taste. Thus him camping out pretty much all afternoon. He finally went home around 9:45 or so.

The events may be mixed up but it was an eventful evening to say the least.

  • Livvy keeps asking for drinks but they didn’t want her to drink anything until she’s in better shape.
  • She had a blood transfusion later on this afternoon which was because of the amount of fluid she was outputting - over 100 in an hour from her chest tubes.
  • they also gave her plasma at one point to try and get her blood levels where they need to be.
  • She is currently on attavan, morphine, dopamine, and milirinone
  • She was very agitated this afternoon / evening. She wanted my mother, my sister and I all within her sight most of the time.
  • She has 4 ivs right now. One in each hand; one in her foot and one that goes directly into her heart. There may be more but I lost count.
  • Three chest tubes. The left tube is the one that is draining the most and the most blood. That’s because that was the side he ended up putting the fontan tunnel on.
  • My sister left at 11PM. Olivia finally fell asleep shortly thereafter when I put her music on via headphones. This is the most amount of time she has slept where she hasn’t woken up and looked for us in a 5 minute span.
  • That’s pretty much it - she’s very swollen from all the fluids they’re pumping into her. Moreso than when she came out of surgery.

I’m hoping to hit the bed shortly. It’s been a long day but I don’t want to leave and have her wake up and me not be there.

    Another update

The surgeon is still hanging around. He’s not sure if he should bring her back to the OR to see where the bleeding (drainage) is coming from. He’s very cautious and that’s a good thing but on the other hand because he’s so cautious there’s no sugar coating from him.

He’s now talking about possibly going home for dinner so that’s a very good sign. Please continue to pray.

    Another Update

Tricia just called to say Olivia is doing great.  The surgeon is concerned with how much drainage is occurring, but that is relatively minor.  He is standing over her watching her.  She is in intensive care right now.  Maddie is having a little trouble dealing with the stress and threw up.  Poor baby.  But Tricia sounded good.

    Update

“everything went well and we’re closing her up now”

That’s the latest update we just got about 10 minutes ago.

    It’s almost over!!!!

    And they started

Well, they just called me to let me know they just are starting the surgery. So here we go…

    And it’s starting…

So here we are … waiting in the PICU waiting room.

They took her down at 8:15AM.

We were supposed to arrive at 6:15AM but walked out the door at 6:15AM. Hey, it’s not like they’re going to start without us ;)

Olivia wanted to go up to the playroom NOW. Asked every 5 minutes. Child Life (Melanie) was able to distract her with a ride in the Barbie Pink Escalade. They let her ride early because they gave her some versed to chill her out. Mama wanted some and is kicking herself for not having gotten herself a rx as well ;).

Right before they took her down to the OR I read her a book called “The Kissing Hand” … it’s about a little raccoon who is nervous about going to school and leaving his mama behind. Mama gives him a kiss on his hand that stays with him while he’s gone so he knows Mama is always with him. Appropriate? I sure think so!

So now we wait. They are going to call my cell with updates. Thankfully we are in a different waiting area from the normal surgeries so we’re away from the traffic of everyone who is in for the “normal” stuff.

Maddie has called me twice thus far today. The first time she talked with Olivia and the second gtime she called to check in on Olivia - ironically right after Olivia went down to surgery. Maddie said she woke up at 2AM and then went back to sleep until 6AM. So she got some sleep which is good.

They were able to reserve us a Family Room so at least I won’t be sleeping in the waiting room because I am not leaving her alone.

It seems surreal to be here again. It’s like no time has passed and yet 3 years have passed. we’re almost past this and then we can move on with our lives.
